Is there a "proper" way to remove laptop speakers so as not to screw up the laptop's sound?

I just bought a pair of logitech laptop speakers, but every time I remove them my computer refuses to produce sound through its own speakers. Control panel says that the sound is coming out of them, but no sound does. Then when I plug the speakers back

IF your speakers are USB speakers, you must select "Safely Remove Hardware" and stop the speaker service.

The Dell Latitude D610 model laptop uses a liquid-crystal display (LCD) screen as a display. If the laptop is dropped, sat on or otherwise damaged, the screen may crack. Turn the laptop off and unplug the power adapter. Unplug any external keyboards, mice or speakers. Remove any PCMCIA cards from thepr slots, located on the side of the laptop. Disconnect any other attached devices, such as external CD-ROM units or hard drives.

Close the laptop and turn it upside-down. Slide and hold the battery-bay latch, then slide the primary battery out of the laptop. Remove the secondary battery if it is present. Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws from the bottom of the laptop that hold the hard drive in place (the hard drive is located along the edge of the computer with the speaker output ports) and then slide the hard drive out.
