A wireless router is the main component of a home network that helps share the Internet connection and other network resources, such as files or printers. Generally this device comes with one WAN port to connect to an Internet source (such as a cable or DSL modem), four Ethernet ports to connect to wired clients (such as a desktop computer), and has built-in Wi-Fi access point(s) to connect to Wi-Fi clients (such as a laptop or an iPad ).
Collectively, depending on what you need, what you should look for in a wireless router includes Gigabit Ethernet, dual-band (both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz), long wireless range, USB ports (if you want to use an USB printer or an external hard drive with it), ease of use, and so on. Not all routers support these features, and you don't always need all of them, either. For example, if what you care about is just sharing an Internet connection, then Gigabit Ethernet and USB ports are unnecessary features. Ease of use is a must for novice users, but for techies, it's actually fun to set up a complicated (or should I say sophisticated) device.

I have an older laptop that used a wireless network card before i broke the card. i am going to buy a new one.
does the wireless card depend on the router and/or the laptop?
The wireless adapter can be a card type or USB type of any brand. Routers do not have a card but software that is installed on the lap top or computer to set up the wireless network. I use a D-Link card adapter and also a AirLink USB adapter with no problems

Ok, so you gave them your mac. How long ago? Sometimes it takes up to 24 hours to go through.
You have your ethernet from the Internet going into the WAN or INTERNET port on your router and your wired computer connected into the LAN on the router. Does that computer get online? If so it may be an issue with wireless settings on the computer. Either way power down the router, wait 30 seconds and power it back on. restart all computers. Can you connect to any now? If wired won’t go on, call your ISP again. If it does but you cant connect wirelessly, update again and I will expand my answer.
@ Gotta run to Best Buy to exchange a laptop, great discussion though...Hey, have you tried GNS3 for your router labs yet?
@ a router would probably solve your issue, I had to purchase laptop for compatability because my moms computer was too old.
Don't you just love it when your brother changes the laptop password n disconnects what others but him own from the router :/
@ @ Restarting your laptop doesn't necessarily mean restarting your connection. Power cycle your router + modem.
