The ZTE-made Cricket A605 ($54.99 direct) is an inexpensive USB cellular modem for connecting your desktop or laptop to Cricket's wireless network.

Cricket covers about a third of the nation with somewhat slow, but reliable 3G. For cellular modems, Cricket offers 2.5GB/month for $45, 5GB for $55, and 7.5GB for $65 with no contract. If you go over the max, Cricket won't cut you off, but will throttle your speeds significantly until the next month starts.

The A605's swivel USB hinge works with different USB port layouts and protects the USB connector when it's not being used.  The modem also sports a microSD memory slot for use with microSD cards up to 4GB. It works in all Cricket broadband coverage areas, and can be used to send and receive text messages. 

Cricket's 3G network works on the 850-, 1,900-, and 1,700-MHz bands, depending upon your location. It covers many major cities, including Chicago, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, and San Diego, as well as some smaller cities such as Arizona, Kansas, Tucson, and Wichita. Cricket's 3G does not cover New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, or anywhere in New England or Florida, however. Laptop Modem ?

I am looking at this laptop and when i compared it with others, the one i was leaning towards has no modem. what does this mean? Should I forget about this laptop or would it not make a difference?

The only reason you'd need a modem is if you are going to be using dial-up internet through a phone line. If you have wireless internet and/or cable/DSL you won't need one.

If you DO need one and the laptop you get doesn't have one built

You could build a tower relatively easy. Building notebooks aren`t worth the trouble nor economical. If you are gung ho, pick up a comp mag with various parts and supply adverts. I only advise rebuilding or updating worthy notebooks with a nice screen. They are just getting cheaper, faster and less troublesome right out of the box. Dell and Gateway will finance pretty much anyone for a NEW, more than adequate notebook. Geeks don`t even bother building notebooks. They just upgrade to save.
