Listen up, laptop manufacturers: Optical drives are an unnecessary financial and physical burden on users, and it's a parasite that should exist only as an external option.

Think about it: The space that an optical drive takes up could be used for so many other things, like a bigger battery, extra hard drive, graphics chip, or cooling fans. Take the Acer Travelmate 8481T-6440 as an example; it's a 14-inch laptop, sans optical drive that tacks on a bigger 84Wh battery, boosting its overall time away from an outlet to 11 hours.

Or you could add none of these things and just make the laptop lighter and slimmer, a la the MacBook Air, ultrabooks, and various ultraportable laptops. For instance, the Asus Zenbook UX31, an ultrabook, weighs 2.86 pounds, vastly lighter than the MacBook Pro 13-inch (4.5 pounds) and lighter still than the Toshiba Portege R705-P35 (3.1 pounds), which contain optical drives.
