My son was just given an Acer Extensa 390C laptop that was in storage for awhile and displays a "CMOS battery bad" error when booting and the computer does not keep time. I downloaded the service manual but it gives no instruction about how

It probably needs to be replaced. It really isn't hard to do, and you should be able to get a new battery at Allbatteryworld.com for a good price.
