Today I installed the CD drive and the mobile mouse, as well as downloading the photos from his camera's XD card. This has all taken...

If you have a slot-load CD drive, you are pretty much screwed. The best thing you can do is turn the computer so that the opening is facing the floor and shake it. That is pretty much the only thing you can do short of replacing the drive.
Add a second hard drive to a laptop by replacing its CD/DVD Optical drive. Works with laptops with a standard CD/DVD Optical drive. newmodeus.com ...

It is *possible* that the drive has slipped away from it’s connection to the motherboard, as laptop optical drives are not connected by cabled, but rather slid directly onto a connection on the motherboard. Unfortunately, they are also screwed into place. If you were looking at the bottom of the laptop, that screw is usually 5 to 6 inches from the side of the laptop where the optical drive tray ejects, and just about centered in relation to the optical drive tray door… in other words the screw goes through the bottom of the laptop into a small bracket at the middle of the back of the optical drive, and you can get a rough idea of how large the optical drive is by looking at the tray when it is ejected. At any rate, there is often a little raised impression of a disc next to the screw hole. Unless this bracket or the casing is damaged though, it is unlikely that the drive has become disconnected. You can push in on the drive tray, and see if the drive slides in or feels like it has reconnected. There will always be a little give when you push in on a closed laptop optical drive, this won’t feel spongy, this would feel like a click of sorts. The optical drive may have been damaged to the point where it needs to be replaced… the motherboard could be damaged. What needs to be done, is the laptop needs to be examined by a professional who has the right tools at his disposal… for example, another optical drive. Rather than have you go out and buy another optical drive just for testing purposes, a professional at a repair shop will have one there he can use. This is why it is worth it to pay the diagnostic charge to allow a professional to diagnose the issue.
