Government probes Chevy Volt battery fire risk

(MoneyWatch) Potential buyers of electric cars often are deterred by the high purchase price and worries about recharging. Now add another hurdle: concern about electric car batteries catching fire after a crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened a formal safety investigation into fire dangers of the Chevrolet Volt. This move came after the agency replicated an incident from last May in which a Volt battery caught fire three weeks after going through a safety crash test. In three tests last week, technicians damaged the Volt batteries in a similar way; one battery caught fire, and two showed signs of overheating.

NHTSA said it had no reports of fires from real-world crashes. And the agency said in a statement: "NHTSA continues to believe that electric vehicles have incredible potential to save consumers money at the pump, help protect the environment, create jobs and strengthen national security by reducing our dependence on foreign oil."

That depends on the battery chemistry. It usually happens because the chemical reactions have finally eaten away all of the outer electrode at some point, letting the paste (acid or alkaline) leak out and corrode anything it touches.

From the Department of Dangerously Wrong Information comes a horrifying piece on Yahoo's open content network, entitled "What New Prius Batteries Cost and How You Can Save Thousands."

It looks like one of many articles that respond to consumer worries over the cost of replacing the high-voltage battery pack in a hybrid car.

This one, though, is something entirely different. It's actually shilling a website that encourages people to buy parts to rebuild their own batteries. And it's riddled with errors, some of them potentially expensive or dangerous.

CLAIM : "At some time or another all Prius owners have to replace their batteries."

FACT : This is likely true if you're talking about the 12-Volt starter battery. It may need to be replaced a few times over the car's life. It's not true if you're talking about the high-voltage nickel-metal-hydride battery pack that's an integral component of Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive System.
