This post is coming live from Santa Barbara, where I’m attending the 2nd annual Edible Institute . Within fifteen feet of my laptop are two brimming baskets of a most magical fruit: the Pixie Tangerine . These are tiny—just a little bigger than a cherry—but they pack a burst of enormous flavour, beautifully balanced between the sweet and the tart. Even the name is adorable, don’t you think?
Please, do not confuse this orange with the Mini Man, that little mandarin that has been so popular at Christmastime the last few years. These are nothing like those mini-mandarins, which are sometimes okay, but more often not even worth the trouble of peeling them. These are different altogether. And much, much better. Their scent permeates the air as soon as they are peeled, and when you bite into a section the juice that spurts into your mouth is intensely tangerine. Remember the first time your childhood self heard the word tangerine? Long before you ever tasted one? In one tiny drop of Pixie juice is all the flavour that you ever imagined a tangerine would have.
