I have a gateway mx7118 that I've had for around 3 years.

It always shuts off when I play video games. I know it's from dust buildup blocking the cooling process, and I need to get to the fan and I think the heatsink to give it a good cleaning.

That is why you should maintain the heatsink operable at all times. It keeps the place around the laptop processor cool and working properly. Sometimes the heatsink gets covered in dust and other small cloggs that are brought in by the fan from the surrounding environment and this prevents it from doing its job as usual. that is why we should clean it from time to time, especially if we live in a place that is a bit dustier and circulated.

Here are some indications about how to clean the Gateway laptop heatsink. It’s not rocket science , so you can do it yourself. Especially if you know how to disassemble a laptop, it will be really easy for you to do this. You only have to know the location of the heatsink and the CPU fan and this is usually placed in the upper left corner in Gateway computers. Any way, if you want to know for sure, you can check the user’s manual. Or you can start removing all the components that cover the heatsink and get to it directly in action. Of course, first you will have to remove the case cover that is fixed by four screws in the four corners or your laptop. Then take out the keyboard and then you will be able to locate the heatsink.
