HP to enter the ultrabook market with Folio

Hewlett Packard, after having abandoned its earlier plan of spinning off its PC unit last month, now has plans of introducing its first Intel based ultrabook laptop to provide competition to Apple’s ultra slim MacBook Air. The laptop named HP Folio, will feature a 13.3 inch screen, be 0.7 inches thick and weigh around 3 pounds. The PC will be available in the market starting December 7 at a starting retail price of $900, according to a statement released by the company. This will be the first HP entry into the ultrabook range of notebooks which has been designed by the chip manufacturer Intel Corp. This is a new standard which offers a very slim design, starts up instantly and offers a battery life which lasts all day.

The motive behind the conception of ultrabook notebooks is to offer Windows based laptops which can effectively compete closely with the lightweight and skinny MacBook Air, which is available starting at $999 for the 11 inch model while the 13 inch notebook costs $1,299. The Paulo Alto based Hewlett Packard is planning to sell its ultrabook notebook to business users and consumers offering a separate Ethernet port for connectivity at locations which don’t have Wi-Fi connectivity, said a spokesman of the company named Mike Hockey. The Folio is included in HP’s lineup of offerings during the holiday season and comes following the company’s CEO Meg Whitman’s decision of retaining its PC business worth $41 billion. Leo Apotheker, Whitman’s predecessor had announced in August that he was considering a spinoff of the company’s PC business.
