if i upgrade my Acer Aspire 4720 laptop memory from 1GB to 4GB, will i have negative results with my files or will my pc just speed up without anything happening to my files?

Just shut down, normal shut down, not hibernate or sleep or anything.
Open it up, ground yourself to discharge static. Insert the ram, and you're good to go. When you next reboot your PC will detect and automatically
